Hi, I recently had a smear that showed high grade dyskaryosis. My gynaecologist and I agreed a lletz procedure would be the best route due to this result and a history of abnormal results since 2008. I've just had my lletz result back and all it says it I have CIN but there's no grade 1, 2 or 3. I'm really confused as I have only ever seen it graded. The advice was repeat smear in 6 months time. I'm just wondering if anyone can help clarify why it hasn't been graded as I've never seen this before.
Hi ShM88 and welcome to the group
I think the best thing to do would be to call the gynaecologist who did the procedure and ask for clarification, as we’re not in a position in the group to say why the letter doesn’t mention a level of CIN.
Does the letter say that clear margins were obtained after the LLETZ, or is is saying that the post LLETZ result is that there is still CIN remaining and it hasn’t all been removed? It certainly seems that the letter isn’t very clear, but this unfortunately seems to be a common issue with letters sent out!
Hopefully you can get an answer and do let us know how you get on-it might help someone else in the same position who’s had a similar letter. Good luck!

Hi SarahH21SarahH21,
Thank you for replying. As soon as the letter came through this morning, I called the colposcopy clinic and the woman who answered the phone just said "Oh, I'm not really sure about all that but CIN without a number is just the same as 1, 2 or 3." Which obviously makes no sense as I've never heard it not be graded.
The letter says:
"Thank you for attending the clinic on 16/05/2022.
A LLETZ (Loop Excision) treatment was performed at this visit and the result was CIN (abnormal cells, not cancer).
The test results indicate that you no longer require to attend the colposcopy clinic. I recommend that your next smear should be taken in 6 months time.
Your GP has been advised of your results. You will be contacted nearer the time to make arrangements for your next smear appointment."
Thats it word for word so yes, a very unclear letter.
I had a result of CIN1 in 2019 and they made a mess up and the letter said I didn't need to be seen for 3 years when I should've been seen in 6 months. I didn't know that though so went by the timescale on the letter. 3 years later and it was high grade dyskaryosis, which resulted in the LLETZ being done. Now I'm even more confused than I was before.
Hi again
CIN normally always has a level so that’s an odd thing for her to say. But it seems what they are saying is that they found CIN (at whatever level or levels) and it’s all been removed so you’ll go back for a test of cure in 6 months, which is the result you want to get after a LLETZ. It’s awful that they don’t make things clearer but seems like everything is fine. You’ll go back for another smear in 6 months and hopefully all will be well.
