I was told I would likely need a hysterectomy but an MDT decided to undertake my third LLETZ in theatre. I was told it would be under local anaesthetic and would be done as a day case surgery (ie no overnight stay)but have learned today (during my 1st preoperative assessment) that it will be under general anaesthetic.
Will I need to stay in hospital overnight? If so how long usually please?
Hi Sindie
I haven’t had a LLETZ under general anaesthetic myself, but I have had a cervical biopsy under general anaesthetic which is a fairly short procedure.
Mine was done as day case surgery, so I was home the same day, although I had to have my partner drive me and be at home with me for 24 hours afterwards. I was monitored in the ward for a couple of hours after I came round from the anaesthetic, and given a cup of tea and toast but felt fine so was discharged.
For a LLETZ even under general anaesthetic, it should still be a day case surgery without the need for an overnight stay, but it would depend how you are after the procedure and how you are affected by the anaesthetic. In my experience after several operations under a general, I’d take a small overnight bag just in case you are kept in but I’d expect you to be discharged the same day if all is well.

Hope it all goes well for you Sindie
