Hi everyone,
I will be having internal radiotherapy at the end of my external radiotherapy and chemo, and I'm absolutely terrified.
It isn't for over 6 weeks time, as I don't start treatment until 25th Sept, but i just can't get it off my mind. Its the thought of being connected and not being able to move for so long, possibly up to 24hr, and the discomfort which is scaring me so much.
If there is anyone that's been through it that can give me advice on how they coped during the procedure, I'd be so grateful.
Hi,
I have just returned home from hospital after having brachy therapy. If there’s anything you want to ask me feel free to contact me.
My advice is be vocal about your pain meds after and don’t be afraid to ask for more. My hospital were fantastic with my care. The radiotherapy itself - when they connect the tubes - you can’t feel at all and only takes about 10/15mins each time.
Take comforting snacks - I really didn’t feel like eating much over the time but jelly babies were a welcome treat along with squash!
You WILL get through it even if it’s tough at times.
Thanks,
Charlie
Hj Charlie,
It's good to hear your experience and will make sure I take your advice about being vocal if I'm in discomfort. I'll also think of some little treats to take too that I know I'll enjoy.
It's this first time I've ever posted on any sites about anything. I've posted on here and cancer research, and I'm so glad I did. Even just writing my worries down, has helped, and after replies over the last couple of days, from people like you that have already been through it, has made me calmer and been able to rationalise it my head.
Thank you so much for your reply. If I think of any questions nearer the time I will get in contact.xx
Hi cam, I finished my internal radiation 3 weeks ago. They knocked me out to insert the tubes so if they haven’t offered you this yet, then ask for it. Equally if you feel any pain then pain killers are readily available so don’t suffer. I found that an injectable muscle relaxant and morphine worked best for me but you may not need this. You won’t feel anything when they hook up your tubes to the radiation machine so don’t worry. The only discomfort I felt was when the nurses came in to turn me (roll you from side to side to prevent sores). Again if this causes you discomfort you have the right to ask them not to do this, as you are highly unlikely to develop a sore for a one night stay in bed. Side effects now are dry/slightly sore vagina and aches in muscle but that’s just the recovery. I’ve found that a vaginal lube/moisturiser helps. All the best, you can do this.
I will make sure I'm not shy when it comes to getting help with any pain. I'll make sure I don't just put up with it.
They gave me the option of a general anesthetic, which I've opted for. Which I think will be right for me too.
Thank you so much for your advice and support xx
Hello Cam80
I was petrified and I hated it.ibthink you have started now and wonder how it's going for you.
You can also ask for gas and air. It REALLY helped me when I finally got it (on number 3!!!).
Whilst it wasn't fun, it was very quick and I felt nothing at all as soon as treatment was done. No residual discomfort.
And so far so good in terms of result: 2 years on.Fingers and everything else massively crossed.
Very best wishes
