Inflammation on / around lung after removal of lung nodules

Hello all,

Wondering if anybody has had similar experiences to me.  I have secondary breast cancer and last year had 2 lung nodules removed, one from each lung.  My CT scans have since been good, as in clear of disease.  However, my most recent scan showed up some inflammation on /around lung which nurse believes may well be the reason I have a cough still.  I'm finding it hard to shift the cough and I get quite bad coughing fits at times, I think particularly after eating but on and off all day.  I don't tend to cough at night.  Has anyone had inflammation on lung post surgery and do you know if there are ways to try to help reduce this with diet, exercise, breathing exercises or medication, or is it just a case of wait and hope for healing in time, or is this a new normal for me?  My oncology team are  monitoring me and I'm due another CT scan beginning of July.

Warm wishes to all x

  • Hi

I am sorry you have inflammation and a cough. I have secondary breast cancer but my mets were in my liver. As my cancer is PD-L1 positive TNBC I was treated with the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab. This caused pneumonitis which showed up at the time as ground glass opacities in my lungs. Although these cleared up on the scan, my lung capacity didn’t fully recover. Whenever I get a cold it goes into my lungs and I get a cough that is really hard to shift. Not sure this helps other than as sympathy from a fellow sufferer!

  • Hi  ,

Thank you for your message and yes appreciate your sympathy as a fellow sufferer. We have to do our best not to get colds don't we, but not always possible. I have found a local choir where the lady does breathing exercises for people with different health issues which I'm going to try. I explained I might be coughing sometimes. She was very understanding so I hope this will help. Warm wishes x

  • Hi so sorry to hear your heath problems , I have lung mets in remission and bronchectasis  now , I have awful cough I can't clear the mucus but someone said fresh not tinned pineapple helps the cough , I have tried it and it does help during the morning but in the evenings not at all, but maybe it will help you. Apparently  there is enzymes in fresh pineapple that helps break mucus and soothes the lungs . Could be worth a try,  good luck hope the choir helps too xxx

  • Hi  thank you so much for the tip re fresh pineapple.i will certainly give it a go. Good to hear your lung mets are in remission. I hope that your cough will ease in time. Warm wishes to you xxx
