Awaiting biopsy results! Any advice on how to cope with the uncertainty when it all seems negative?

I am very new to all this but I found a hard area on my breast a month or so ago and had my first appointment at the breast clinic nearly two weeks ago where they took biopsies of the lump and also nearby lymph node. I was also sent for an MRI on my spine as I said I had been experiencing back pain. I had never considered the two might be linked and am now terrified that I have cancer that has spread to my bones. I was told the lump measured 5cm and the lymph node looked abnormal. Everything to me seems to be pointing in a very scary direction and I can't imagine being told anything positive. I have two young children and I keep telling myself I shouldn't predict the future and I'm good at pretending everything is ok in front of them. I've always suffered with health anxiety so this wait feels unbearable! I just keep thinking the worse with every new ache and pain especially as I feel like the top of my back and shoulder now hurt! Has anyone had experience of these symptoms with any positive outcomes or any way of coping with this uncertainty? Thanks in advance for any advice!️

  • Hi

Welcome to the MacMillan community. I am one of the breast cancer community champions and I hope you feel well supported here. In many ways, the early stage of going through test after test and waiting for results, is the hardest part. You start off with little idea of what you are facing and it’s natural to feel the worst. It’s also natural to worry about every new ache and pain. I have metastatic cancer, in remission, and am on 6-monthly surveillance. Each time I am due a scan I feel aches and pains which magically disappear once I have the results.

There are two really good things here. They are investigating thoroughly which means you will get the best possible treatment plan. Secondly, most people get good outcomes. Even cancer that had advanced, like mine did, can be treated and held stable, even if it can’t be cured. Unfortunately the waiting is torture and I hope you don’t have long to wait.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. It's reassuring to hear from someone who has been through all of this already. I have another week of waiting before I have another appointment where I assume I will be given the results and a plan of action. I'm so glad I happened to mention the back pain so I got the MRI quickly too! Great to hear that yours is in remission, long may it last!!x

  • Hi. Sorry you are going through this.

No advice sorry but appreciate what you are going through. I get my results tomorrow aswell, the anxiety is horrendous, cant sleep, eat or concentrate.

I was told its highly suspicious and to expect a breast cancer diagnosis but he said its really confusing as its 4cm long and very thin and cant see where it goes into healthy tissue, which is freaking me out. They put a marker in. Dr said they might not know stage etc until the operation.

Hope all goes well tomorrow, let me know!

    Xx

  • Yes I had a marker put in too but I didn't fully understand what this was at the time! Words like suspicious really don't help and then you're just left of your own for weeks to imagine the worst... Its awful!! Sending you all the best for tomorrow, hopefully knowledge will be power!x
