I was due to have a therapeutic mammoplasty tomorrow but its had to be postponed as my tumours are too deep for the magseeds im absolutely devastated as this is the second time my surgery has been cancelled last minute and I'm not sure how much more I can take

I've now got to wait for another appointment potentially three weeks plus and have wires put in instead the plus side is the wires and dye are going to be put in on the morning of surgery so haven't got to run around the day before

The wire insertion sounds way more terrifying than having the magseeds put in though

Anyone had the wires instead of the magseeds and is it painful?

  • Hi

I had a deep tumour in a large breast and had a wire guided lumpectomy. I went in on the morning of the surgery. They numbed my breast, used ultrasound to work out where the wire needed to go, put it in, and then put me in the mammogram machine with light pressure to check it was in the right place. I then sat around with the wire poking out of me until the surgery in the afternoon.

It wasn’t as uncomfortable as the radioactive tracer that they also put in on the same morning to locate my sentinel lymph node. Whilst that was a fairly quick injection it had to be done very close to the nipple and felt like a bee sting. The blue dye went in during the surgery. My urine looked like loo cleaner for a while.

I am sorry this is causing further delays for you.

  • Thank you so much for reply, it's good to know the wire insertion wasn't too bad for you it sounded horrific when they explained it to me
