Exemestane

I am currently taking Exemestane.

I have taken it for 8 months and two months ago my GP gave me steroid injections into my finger and thumb due to trigger finger type problems.  I asked could this be caused by the Exemestane and her reply was “Sometimes these things just happen”, so I felt that maybe I was just unlucky.

Last week I developed a pain in my big toe, similar to what I experienced with my thumb, it progressed quickly to not being able to curl or raise my toe and the pain at the ball of my foot (underneath my toe) and the joint above it is very painful to put weight on and walk on.  I have no pain on the top of my foot and there is no sign of inflammation.

Am I just unlucky again and need to arrange another steroid injection or should I consider asking the breast care clinic to allow me to take a break from the Exemestane first to rule it out as the cause ?

Has anyone else had tendon issues and found them to be caused by Exemestane ?

  • Hi Eljat I was swapped onto Exemestane after Anastrozole gave me high blood pressure. Ive had a months  break from it due to muscle/Joint pain especially feet arms and hands. I had a steroid injection in my thumb. However I went back on it 2 months ago and so far so good. The pains havent come back. Maybe try a break because even though im taking it again, I feel like the break may have helped settle my system as the side effects seem so much better now. It was my BCN that agreed the break.

One thing I have noticed recently is I have very cloudy eyesight in the mornings. It comes back to normal after an hour or so but its very strange. Not sure if its the Exemestane or maybe age!

Hope you get some answers and your big toe improves. Xxx

  • Hi Susz

I went to the optician and as I felt I couldn’t focus properly and even experienced double vision on a couple of occasions.  After a thorough examination she concluded I had very dry eyes and suggested lubricating eye drops.  I use them at night and during the day if I notice my eyesight is a bit off.  That has seemed to resolve the problem for me.

My BCN is phoning me to discuss this on Monday and I will suggest this to her.  Thank you
