I quit my job in NHS to partially retire a week ago and a few days later found a breast lump and my worst fears have been confirmed. I went privately to get diagnosis and am seeing the nhs breast clinic this Friday. I have lots of travel and plans I now need to cancel and I just want this out of me whatever it takes ! I have many other responsibilities and I feel I can’t manage any of them. How can you go to bed one night with nothing and wake up in the morning with a lump ? I’ve had mamogram and US awaiting biopsy results but told I need surgery and at the very least radiation. I’m supposed to go and care for my elderly mum for the next two weeks a long way from my home as my sister who cares for her really badly needs the break ! But I don’t know if I will have to rush back etc ! I feel so guilty. How quickly do these things move ? Any advice at all gratefully received
There is the old quotation "how long is a piece of string". I can only suggest that you you write down your questions for your meeting this Friday. If possible take someone with you. The professionals I have met are kind and want to support within the confines of their organisation. Health trusts as you do vary. Your Breast Cancer Nurse can become your best friend. There are lots of organisations in the community that will also support you.
A conversation with your sister may also help with your thinking.
All the very best as move forward on this journey.
Hi Gusmum
I am sorry you have had your plans so rudely interrupted. It sounds like your appointment will be to feed back on biopsy results. That will hopefully tell you more about the cancer - it’s grade and whether it has receptors for any, all or none of oestrogen, progesterone or HER2. Assuming they don’t need any more tests, you should find out what the next steps are. At my appointment I was booked in for surgery and my pre-op. The surgery was originally going to be about 4 weeks after the appointment but I arranged it a week later for my convenience.
