Re-incision Surgery

Hi All

It's been a while since I have posted on here but after some advice please.

I had a Lumpectomy with full Axcillary Node Clearance on 7th January. When I got the results the surgeon confirmed that cancer was present in all 19 Lymph Nodes and he didn't get clear margins. He referred me straight away for a CT Scan and thankfully it came back clear so I started 8 rounds of Chemo in February. I finished chemo in June and I had further surgery on 1st July (re-incision) I am due to see my surgeon on Tuesday 21st to get my results. In the meantime I have had a follow up appointment with my Oncologist to discuss Radiotherapy this morning and she told me that they didn't get clear margins again and that the surgeon will talk me through my options when I see him. So now I have to wait for that appointment and my head is all the place . It's been a really hard journey until now and I honestly thought that the surgery was it and I would move onto Radiotherapy but obviously not. I know I will get my answers next week but in the meantime I'm just after abit of advice please. Will I be offered a third re-incision or will I be told I need a mastectomy? Has anyone else had 3 surgeries because they didn't get clear margins. I'm terrified of yet another surgery and I'm terrified of may be a mastectomy. Thank you

  • Hi

I am sorry you are going through this. It’s my understanding people can be offered another re-excision, obviously depending on what the margin problem is and whether there id enough breast tissue to get a decent cosmetic result. It might also be worth understanding the role radiotherapy could play in addressing the risks around this.

I have metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer, in remission

  • Hi

Thank you for responding to my query. I suppose I'll get my answers next week but it's encouraging that I may be offered another re-incision rather than a mastectomy. I didn't cope too well with the first 2 surgeries my anxiety was through the roof so the thought of yet another surgery is not helping. Hope your journey is still going well I can see you are in remission which is amazing x

  • I am sitting waiting until it is time to go into the hospital for my third surgery.  I understand this will be on the site of the previous incisions - which have healed to the point of being scarcely noticeable.  Obviously I'm not looking forward to it, but being familiar with the routine, I am just prepared to Get Through It.  Bring plenty to read.

  • I have my appointment today so I will find out if I can have another re-incision or mastectomy? Good luck for your surgery hope all goes well and the recovery goes ok x
