I had a bilateral mx a week ago today. I had some lymph node involvement in the left side so full clearance. In the right of already had full clearance but they were going to have a root around in case they'd missed some. I have two drains in, one at each side.
The left side hurts like hell. I'm watching the clock to see when I get my next lot of pain relief. I'm taking paracetamol, ibuprofen and codine. It is still draining quite slowly. I've a reasonable range of movement. I can touch my shoulderblades, and the top of my head.
My oncologist says I'm as tough as old boots but this really isn't pleasant. Can anyone make a suggestion.
Is this normal? I've swelling but everything is soft, there's no heat and I feel fine. I just hurt.
Grateful for any input.
Hi there, so sorry you are having this horrid experience. I remember that first week or two after my mastectomy last August. I was prescribed morphine as nothing else was working and it was a game changer and got me through. I only used it for a short time and I know they often don’t like to prescribe it - but I asked and then it was doable and I was able to sleep and be out of pain . I had a great nurse who said to me ‘why suffer’ if there is relief out there and I am very glad I took her advice . I hope this helps a little
Thanks for the response.
I had my drains out today. The left side, where I've had full node clearance, that drain hasn't been working properly . This has resulted in extra pain. I've flagged this up twice, the first time in the evening of my surgery. I was told it would be fine sometimes they take a while. In addition the usual surgery pain is evolving into nerve pain. I remember it from my first node clearance 20 years ago. Soon I'll get the ball of socks in the armpit and the splitting skin down my arm. Funny how these memories come flooding back.
My GP has prescribed some suitable medication I'll get OH to pick up in the morning.
Meanwhile if I stay fairly still I might get a bit of sleep.
The boon part and right side long devoid of lymph nodes are feeling fine and healing well.
I'll check out the lymph drainage massage on YouTube too.
Night all.
Three times! What did I do?
OH got me some Pregabalin prescribed by GP. Took it at 9.30 after a really dreadful night. By 10.00 I was asleep curled in my usual position on my side almost pain free. It was bliss.
I am tired now and starting to feel twinges. Can't take another till 9.30. But at least I can look forward to a reasonable nights sleep.
I hope everyone else is as lucky.
