Chemo and diverticulitis

Well it's been an interesting time after round 1 of chemo (EC). All was ok for the first week after treatment and then on friday I had lower left abdominal pain. Phoned the 24 hour nurse and they told me to go to A and E. A couple of CT scans and an x-ray later and I was admitted with acute diverticulitis- never had this before. Finally sent home on Monday with antibiotics. Has anyone else had diverticulitis whilst on chemo? Did you manage the 2 ok? To top it all my hair started to fall out today. Quite a dramatic start!

  • Yes I had the same issue. I got through 4 cycles of EC ok but got hit by diverticulitis after the first Paclitaxel infusion. Spent 3 days in hospital. I found I needed to get them to reduce the anti-sickness meds they were giving me with the infusions as they were causing constipation, and I wasn’t suffering from sickness anyway. With this change, it didn’t repeat. The diverticular disease is still there per my regular scans (I have metastatic TNBC) but thankfully it hasn’t flared up again in almost 4 years since that incident.

  • Thanks for the reply. I was worried about getting constipated again after round 2 so it's a real relief to know there are things they can do to get around it. X

  • I found I had to really push to stop them giving me things that would make me constipated. They are so worried about people being sick.
