Mammogram v Ultrasound?

Hi just a query about the difference in detection. Can a mammogram show benign calcification results but a further ultrasound show a cancerous lump not detected by the mammogram?

  • Hi

I was recalled after a routine mammogram which had shown an area of calcification they wanted to check. On having an ultrasound it found a small lump which didn't show on the mammogram which was breast cancer.

Has this happened to you too?

  • Oh Im sorry about your dx. I think I have been able to feel a lump/thickening in my remaining breast inside lower area but didnt mention it at my check up at breast clinic because mammogram gave all clear, except benign calcifications. Now its just niggling me whether I should have mentioned it as its still there or is it my imagination because mammogram didnt pick it up?

  • I would definitely give your BCNS a call. It might be nothing but it's best to get checked.

  • Hello,  calcifications on mammogram are usually followed up with ultrasound and sometimes MRI.  A biopsy is always needed to see if the calcifications are benign or not.
I had calcifications in right breast and followed with ultrasound which showed nothing.  Had a stereotactic biopsy and had DCIS.  I couldn’t feel anything in my breast felt normal so thank goodness mammogram picked it up.
Had MRI too and it found a very small 3mm cancerous tumor in other breast with 6mm DCIS.  Not on mammogram or ultrasound.
    Take care.
