Hi this may seem like a random question but what toothpaste do people use during chemotherapy as I've had a few mouth issues and I'm currently using Sensodyne toothpaste as I have had sensitive gums but feel like the toothpaste is burning my tongue.   Then my tounge looks red . Maybe taste changes during chemotherapy.  Thanks.

  • Use a paste which has no sodium laurel sulphate (sls) which can be an irritant. Sensodyne make one but so do Aldi and it’s much cheaper! Also, rinsing with salt water a couple of times a day works wonders.

  • I think I’ll be trying Weleda Calendula toothpaste - fennel flavor - but Tom’s have a few kinds on Amazon. They do fennel, too, and spearmint if you like it. I’m not wild about peppermint  at the best of times.

  • Hi, I'd second the idea of a salt water rinse.  It helps with hygiene and is much more bearable than mouthwash, which I also found super super spicy.   I stuck with the mildest toothpaste I could find but it was pretty tough during chemo, everything tasted super spicy. Best wishes

  • I also rinse my mouth in olive oil (cold pressed, virgin etc) 3 x a week. It’s done more for my gum issues than the hygenist ever did. So I will be continuing with that when the chaemo starts - or upping it.

  • Hi I was prescribed colgate duraphat 5000ppm. Unfortunately I can't recall if it was during chemo or afterwards. x
