Good morning,
I had a WLE 2 weeks ago and after my dressings came off yesterday I was quite shocked by the change in shape and size of my breast. I'm feeling quite upset about it but my consultant was pleased with it. It is a 2-3 inches higher than the other breast and completely square along the bottom. I know these things we go through are to save our lives and I don't want to focus on the small things but this upset me much more than I thought it would. Maybe because the consultant said my tumour was very small. Has anyone else been surprised or upset by the shape? My incision is all along the bottom crease, about 5 inches long. Also I have skin tears where the dressings were removed so feeling uncomfortable today. I thought the dressings would be taken off a bit more slowly or with water or something else to save the skin but all came off in less than 5 seconds, they said there is no other way. Sorry, not having a good day :(
Hi MissP6 , sorry you’re feeling upset with the appearance of your breast post op. You are entitled to feel this way, none of us asked to get cancer and while we accept the treatments because we want rid of the beast, it can be very shocking. In my case my long excision - the length of my index finger plus knuckle - was a huge shock as I’d had a previous lumpectomy for a fibroadenoma (benign) where the incision was tiny. My incision is down the outer side of my breast so maybe has affected the shape of my breast less. It was all so swollen after the op (very large haematoma) that it was hard to see how it might end up! The haematoma was another shock - my multicoloured breast looked absolutely horrible, black and blue from the haematoma plus the very artificial blue from the blue dye. Thankfully the breast nurses saw me regularly to monitor it and it resolved itself eventually but it sometimes felt like ‘’the last straw’. I felt very vulnerable and very different to other ops I’ve had in the past where I felt I bounced back quickly.
This might not be the final appearance of your breast. Stuff will have been moved around to get to the lump and I think it can take a good amount of time to settle down. So try not to assume that this is it.
Sorry you’ve also got skin tears from the dressing removal, that sounds grim and another thing you could just do without. Some of the procedures we have to go through really are brutal.
I haven’t really got any answers but wanted to respond. Sending love and a big but gentle virtual hug , HFxx
Hi MissP6
After my lumpectomy last year the bottom of my boob was square shaped and I was surprised too. It took maybe a couple of months (I can’t recall exactly) but it sorted itself out and is now back to being nicely curved. My incision is also in the bottom crease and once everything had dropped back into place(!) can’t really be seen. Hopefully with a bit of time yours will too. x
Thanks for taking the time to write to me, HF, sorry you suffered with the haematoma, that must have been painful and worrying. I'm glad the breast care nurses looked after you. I feel better now I think someone cares, I was feeling like a piece of meat yesterday as I didn't feel cared for or cared about. Maybe in this journey we feel sorry for ourselves and get fed up now and again, so maybe it's good to say that it isn't all perfect all the time although I've met some lovely people working in the hospital. I'll carry on turning up and hoping for good news. Take care and thanks again xx
Thank you Eebee, for your lovely encouraging message, hopefully mine will settle down too. I'm glad you reached out to reply to me, I think I read a post from you saying that a year on you're doing well and happy again, which makes me feel positive. Thanks again Eebee, and wishing you a continued positive journey xx
