Hematoma

I had a lumpectomy in April and was healing nicely until a hematoma revealed itself. The incision has a 1cm hole in the middle part (the top and bottom have healed) where the ‘old blood’ is finding its way out. I can see a suture stretched inside the hole. The surgeon helped evacuate a LOT of old blood but it’s still bleeding daily over the last week. I’m frustrated, fed up. Has anyone on this forum had to have their incision re-sutured/stitched because of this post-surgical complication?

  • I had this happen about three and a half weeks after surgery. Mine had fluid/blood (lots!) coming out of the end of the incision when I thought I was nearly healed so bit of a surprise! I was given some antibiotics and more dressings put on as it was a Bank Holiday weekend and then a couple of days later it was aspirated by my surgeon. Once all that had been done it healed up properly in a few more days. x

  • This is my current situation too.  I’m 7 weeks post DIEP flap, my boob had blistered a bit immediately post-op so I have been back at the dressings clinic weekly.  Last week my surgeon found a haematoma, so we are now trying to heal it with packing dressing.  I feel like it could take ages to heal but my oncologist I met yesterday seems confident it will heal quickly and is so hopeful she’s tentatively booking my chemo to start in 3 weeks.  We can delay it if it’s not healed.  Like you I feel frustrated by it, but everyone seems sure it’s going to be fine so I feel that I have to trust the process!  Best of luck with yours!

  • Thank you. You too.x

  • I’m glad yours healed. x
