Eating during chemo

Hi

I've started my chemo now, second one done.

And I've been wondering, have you changed your diet while you were on treatment at all? I've been looking online and almost every food is not safe or suitable to eat. Everything needs to be discussed with oncologist. I'm just confused, why suddenly everything is not suitable and can cause problems, just normal food likes of rhubarb, cheese, milk, fish, literally everything needs to be discussed as may interfere with the treatment. My oncologist never mentioned anything about avoiding any foods. What am I supposed to eat. If I listen to Google, I will starve , it's really making me feel angry.

What are your thoughts on this ? What are you eating during your chemo?

  • Hi ShyFox

I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on this forum.  You can follow your normal diet while undergoing treatment.   I ate whatever I wanted during chemo and it didn't do me any harm.

Wishing you the best of luck with the rest of your treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Hi

I didn’t change my diet at all and was never told to. There is advice to avoid things like kefir, actimel etc.Just ensure everything is properly cooked. I tended to eat what I wanted when I wanted. Due to my body crying out for carbs I did put weight on….I have since lost it though!

  • What chemo drug are you on? I believe there are a lot of restrictions with the Red Devil one but others I didn’t think so. I have not avoided anything so I wouldn’t worry, crack on as normal.

  • I'm on paclitaxel to start with, for first 12 weeks.

  • I’m also currently on paclitaxal, had 4 sessions of it and not been told to avoid any particular foods so don’t worry.

  • Hi, my oncologist told me to eat the same as I would if I was pregnant, so avoid raw eggs, soft cheese etc. she was concerned about being immunocompromised and getting an infection.   If you're concerned or want some further advice, you could give the lovely folks here at Macmillan a call on 0800 808 0000 for a chat.  Best wishes

  • I was told to eat normally by my docs and "just eat what I fancy, when I fancy it by my CNS., I'm diabetic too so worry about blood sugars g insulin & food. Especially as 1st ever chemo and my blood sugars are scaring me!

  • What I ate when I was pregnant? My memory isn't good but my 2 are 35 & 40 + I don't remember the cheese & pate etc rules.

Not sure I remember that much or the pregnancies at all. Just the labour....
