Hi All,
I count myself lucky although it’s a double edge sword as would have preferred to not be on this journey but here I am ♀️I was diagnosed stage 1 in January and due to it going deeper than originally thought I’m now recovered from 2 ops and cancer free!
I start 2 weeks of radiotherapy next week and was wondering if anyone has any tips or experiences the line to share ? In short I’ve accepted that fatigue and skin issues are likely but was wondering if anyone has experienced other effects?
Hopefully the last part of my journey and the end is in sight
I’ve just finished 5 days of radio today and only experienced fatigue but it wasn’t - much easier than chemo!
I haven’t experienced any skin issues yet either.
Just kept moisturising the affected area.
I can feel it being ‘tight’. This is over a mastectomy scar.
Good luck
Hi Thankyou for responding. I’d be interested to know how you feel in the next week or so as I’ve heard the fatigue often comes when you stop ? Luckily I haven’t had to have chemo x
Hope you are doing well!
I had radiotherapy in February. The important things are to moisturise thoroughly and regularly to keep your skin hydrated and drink lots of fluids (this helps with possible fatigue).
Most people say they find radiotherapy easy but if you have any problems, ask on here as there will always be someone to offer advice.
I have very sensitive skin, as in I can get hives / allergic reactions easily and so I used flamigel which worked very well for me. Lots of people use Aveeno otherwise.
Good luck! X
Thankyou. Can I ask did you go back to work fairly soon afterwards?
Hello there, It has been almost 3 years since my last radiation treatment. I had 16 treatments to both breasts and then a boost of 5 treatments to the right side tumor bed. I had DCIS in right breast and stage 1 in left. I was very nervous about it as I have very sensitive light skin and atopic dermatitis flares too. No issues on breast tissue but was concerned.
I was very careful with my skin care and used AVENE products all fragrance free and talked to them first before buying. I used cleanser , Cicalfate restorative cream and the Avene thermal spring water spray as needed. Got the ok from radiation oncologist too as they were not familiar with these products. I live in Florida.
I faithfully moisturized and started to do it about a week before my treatments began to make sure my skin barrier was in good shape. When I showered I always had my back to the shower head as did not want to have the water pounding on my chest. Never dried my skin by rubbing only pat dry and moisturizing while skin slightly damp. .
My nipples did get sore almost after the first treatment but that went away after 4-5 days. I also did have occasional itching on breasts but used hydrocortisone 1% and worked right away.
No sun exposure to area and stayed covered up.
Drank plenty of fluids and are ate well and tried to sleep well too.
Well that is pretty much it. Take care and radiation was not bad. I only had an 8 mile round trip so no issues with travel.
Barbara
Thankyou for the advice, it’s helpful. I have started using E45 for showering and moisturising. It’s just nice to hear others experiences. That’s a lot of sessions. Hope it’s all behind you now X
Yes, but I can mostly work from home, so am fairly lucky with that.
I am going back to work next week for the first time after 12 months.
Not sure how I’m going to be but sure I’ll soon find out lol x
