Zoledronic acid

In February 2024, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a very difficult year of chemo and radiotherapy, I was very happy to be given the all clear. I have now been offered 6 monthly Zoledronic acid infusions but the side effects sound awful, although I doubt they could be any worse than chemo.  I am quite anxious about having the infusions and would be interested to hear from anyone who has had Zoledronic acid infusions and whether they had any side effects. Any advice would be helpful.

  • I am due to have them to. I asked a friend who had them a couple of years ago and she had no problems with them at all.  They were easy she said.  I suppose like most of this we can all react differently to our treatments.

  • Hi, I have to admit the first one gave me shocking cold snd flu symptoms for about 24 hours, but ok after that.  I was ready for it with the second one and I had zero side effects and I've had 5 since with no problems. Hope this reassures you although we are all different. Best wishes

  • Hi Minniver, I am on zoledronic acid for 3 years also. I had my second one in february. I felt a bit fluey the following day,  apart from that I was fine. I have read other posts where people have experienced the same. Have not heard of anyone having awful side effects, where'did you hear that?

  • Hi

I'll be having my 6th infusion in June and have never experienced any side effects.

  • I’m due my 5th one of these in July. I had the 1st one at the same time as an infusion of EC chemo, so felt terrible anyway. All the others since have given me a fluish reaction like after a vaccination, but fine after 24/36 hours. Some people only react to the 1st one.
I do get dental check ups more regularly than I used to- I was only going every 1 - 2 years or when I thought I needed something, but am fine so far.

  • I felt the side effects sounded awful after reading the leaflets I was given at the hospital. After reading the responses to my post, I feel a bit more reassured and will probably give it a go. I'm happy to try anything that will help but I had such a terrible experience with chemo that it's made me a bit wary.

  • Hi

I had my first ZA in January and was a bit flu-ey with a high temp the following day. I had my third one this week and felt practically nothing. I wouldn’t let the potential side effects stop you.

    Good luck
