Hi I’m due to have chemo (EC) at 830 on Wednesday. When would you eat? Would you eat a good breakfast and then an evening meal? Or will this make me feel sick?

  • I am having my second EC on Tuesday at 0945. I am hoping to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner as normal.  I guess I will know the answer to your question on Tuesday evening, but of course, chemo affects us all differently.

  • Thanks, I had my first one at 1345 and was told not to eat much for the rest of the day as it could make me feel sick. I think I’ll have 3 small meals.

  • I find I am more likely to feel sick if I don’t eat.  So possibly light bites every couple of hours might be a better option.  I have got some Gaviscon in for this round as I did get slight heartburn last time.

  • Light bites is a good idea. How did you find cycle 1? I didn’t have the best experience. Day 5/6 I could hardly walk where I was so weak. I’m 49 years old and fit and it it was so hard. Seeing oncologist tomorrow and hopefully they can tweak a few things

  • Hello, I am going to start my first chemo cycle on Tuesday at 9am. Just wanted to say reading your messages here really helping me. And it’s a good advice to not eat much. I have been told to take a cold sandwich or nibble for the day.

  • Hi - i have just finished my 4 rounds of EC.    Personally i found to eat normally before the treatment (as this was when i felt my best!).   My appetite then  went straight after treatment for a few days plus feeling of nausea for 24 hours (although they did give me antisickness drugs to help with this).

i was advised to eat smaller amounts during the day whenever I felt hungry/felt like eating  rather than the usual  3 larger meals a day.

Wishing you all the best for your treatment.

  • Daughter ate normally for the days before each cycle and even on the day - she would have a sandwich from the trolley while having treatment. Nausea set in that night and she then ate very little for the next two days. Advice from CNS team was to eat what you wanted, when you wanted - if it was a doughnut at 2.00 am, then go for it. Little and often was the way to go.  Best of luck.
