Which bra for post lumpectomy?

Hello lovely people,

I was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago, with IDC, luckily it all seems positive as in it doesn’t seem aggressive, an op followed by radiotherapy and hormone therapy after that. I did have a sneaking suspicion as my family history dictates I would be lucky to miss out not getting cancer in one form or another. I feel quite practical about it bar the fact I no longer have my immediate family for support, they have all passed very sadly, incl my sister from multiple myeloma. Anyway I’m booked in for a lumpectomy and sentinel biopsy in a few weeks, and would love some recommendations for a post op bra please? I’m a DD cup, and have read to go up a size. I’ve also spotted a cancer research bra/crop top, the one with  pink hearts around the band? Are they any good as they look comfortable. Any other hints and tips post op would be very welcome. Many thanks

  • I'm in a similar situation to you, I had a re-excision earlier in the week, I only had a few days warning that I'd need a front closing bra. I went for the Asda 2 pack and started wearing them as soon as I could just to get used to them. I'm a 36 C and after reading reviews I went for the large, post surgery it a bit cosy on the op side. Only annoying problem is to do up is 5 clasps so takes some patience!

  • Out of interest , how much vat did you have taken off your Macom bra please?

  • Hiya, I had a lumpectomy back in 2010 and two years ago a mastectomy. In both case I got my post surgery bras from M&S. They are great at helping you choose the right bra a best comfortable fit. I Four leaf cloverill buy and wear them now as they are comfy and I can also put my prosthesis in the pocket. Aomena are also very good but can be more expensive than M&S. I'd suggest checking out both. Good luck Four leaf clover  I hope all goes well for you Revolving hearts

  • I got the Cancer Research bra - it's great. Almost identical to the Bravissimo equivalent, tho slightly softer. I had bought the Bravissimo first, (and tried it on in the shop) so had already got the right size - they are in S,M.L, 2L etc so hard to guess when buying online.

I haven't got on with the M and S one I got. - Only 3 hooks, and a strip of velcro, which makes the front fastening area a bit rigid and uncomfortable and not as secure or malleable as the ones with lots of hooks and eyes. Also the band curls up a bit in use. But this may just be a sizing issue. Its hard to get the right size when you don't know in advance if any swelling is going to be in the cup area or more general.

    Good luck.

  • Sadly, my (quite large) M&S didn't have any bra specialist staff around when I went in - a big disappointment as I had to guess the best one from a (surprisingly small) selection.

  • Interesting, I haven't used the front fastening ones as didn't get on with them. Have a look at the amoena web site. The NHS use them too Relaxed️ Good luck

  • I had a lumpectomy 2 weeks ago and went on a shopping spree for post op bras. I got a zip one from M&S (not post op as I found the velcro in the post op style too stiff), an eye and hook style from asda which has good coverage of the breasts, and also one from Primark from their new 'adapt' range which is magnetic and ended up being my favorite. I personally went a size up for a less snug fit as I wore them all the time post op for support and just to protect the skin.

  • M&s do some comfy post surgery bras.  I bought two in their sale.

    Good luck! xx
