Radiation worries

Hi gang

ive just had my mastectomy and lymph clearance results

- I had two positive nodes that were showing nothing but scar tissue so Chemo and phesgo did their jobs!!

- 15mm residual invasive disease and quite a bit of DCIS in the removed breast

ive got my Onc appointment on Thurs to talk next steps and I’ve been thinking a lot about radiation and if they suggest it whether there is enough value to warrant the potential side effects.

I’m 41, mum to a toddler avid netball player, yogi and general outdoor enthusiast. I really want to get my full mobility and strength back in my shoulder and arm whilst doing everything I can to avoid lymphoedema. I also think I will want to reconstruct in the future.

Obviously achieving remission and avoiding recurrence is number one but I’m wondering if radiation can be avoided? I’m triple positive so will be on hormone blockers, Herceptin and possibly Kadcyla.

What have your experiences been of rads post lymph clearance and Mx? Side effects? Is it worth it?

  • I had 4 nodes out (as opposed to total clearance) so not sure if that’s the same as you

im on day 12 of 15 radiotherapies

i have a bit of fatigue but I think that’s related to sudden onset of insomnia/ night sweats (thanks letrozole) , have had headache (but see above)

a few teeny blisters but so far no soreness no loss of movement managing to go for a run most days. I’ve defibately lost some upper body strength but that’s not from radiotherapy it’s from not having lifted any weights really since ops at end June/ start July.
lymphoedema is certainly a concern - all I think one can do is keep moving.
not sure if that’s at all helpful. I’d say compared to what you’ve been through radiotherapy is a doddle.
