Delayed side effects of chemo

Sorry me again...For the past couple of weeks my hands and now my feet/ankles are very swollen. My hands are now back to normal but my feet/ankles have been very swollen for the past week and sometimes hurt. I had my last chemo session 7 weeks ago so don't know if this is a delayed side effect. Has anyone else had anything like this? Thanks

  • Hi, I must admit I've not come across this before, might be worth giving your breast nurse a call and having a chat.  Alternatively the lovely folks here at Macmillan are at the end of the phone on 0800 808 0000. Best wishes

  • Hi my chemo finished early 2020. I had some slight neuropathy in my right foot during the latter stages. I also had nail problems. On finishing chemo I don't recall it being immediately worse but over time the soles of my feet my toes and ankles have become swollen and uncomfortable.i can't easily crunch up my toes and they are deformed. The soles just feel odd but not overly painful. I have arthritis. I know some of this is down to chemo but not sure how much  is the aromatase which I have to take for another year or indeed down to my age. I am in my 70s and it is easy for medics to age and weight attribute problems. Walking  and online aerobics was something I did following chemo but they are no longer a pleasure and my feet have increased from an 8 to a 10! I struggle to find comfortable shoes. One form of exercise I have found enjoyable and thoroughly recommend is aqua fitness. I do classes 4-5 times a week. I recommend you ask not just your oncologist but also your GP. A referral to physio and podiatry might help. X-rays and I think ultrasound showed up problems in my feet. No magic solutions but you deserve some answers. Hope it resolves itself. Good luck x

  • I’ve had this and spoke to my specialist as I was a bit concerned. Specialist said that chemotherapy has a huge effect on our bodies and even after treatment it is still effecting us and my swollen ankles will settle down eventually. He said wasn’t anything to be concerned about and to be kind to myself.

  • Thank you everyone. I spoke to my GP and oncology nurse today and both have said they aren't concerned at present. They think the swelling is probably a combination of weather (it has been very hot) and the steriods needed during chemo as they can effect the way your tissues deal with fluid. They are confident it will resolve itself in time so feeling very relieved.

  • It’s odd how side effects can appear much later. My nails started splitting and getting horrible ridges and texture about 2 months after my last chemotherapy session and 8 weeks later are slightly better but not good.

Now I have skin splitting on the soles of my feet and between my toes - not sure if this is a side effect too.

Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Thanks for commenting. I've also noticed my nails are getting progressively worse, they are a weird browny colour and the ends of my fingers (like below the nail) can be tender. I use a cream on my feet which was recommended to me by a podiatrist as I'm also diabetic so feet problems are common, so far it's keeping my feet ok. It's weird how side effects happen even after treatment has stopped.

Hope things start improving for you soon x
