Post mastectomy pain

Hi All,

I am just over 4 weeks since my single mastectomy with reconstruction and Sentinal node biopsy.

up until now whilst it’s been a little sore and painful I’ve managed the pain relatively well with ibuprofen or paracetamol and rest.

the last 3-4 days I’ve had the worst shooting and stabbing pains in the breast, node scar and back of my arm. With increased soreness and pulling around the breast scar and generally feeling dreadful, not sleeping. I’m due to go back to work on Monday, I do work in a desk based role, but not sure how I’m going to manage this at the moment.

i guess I’d like to know if anyone else has experienced anything similar, should I be taking something stronger for the pain? Or is this quite normal and I need to ride it out?

many thanks!

  • I don’t have experience of this, but pain killers should make pain manageable.  I wonder if it would be worth you discussing alternative forms of pain relief with your doctor? You sound like you are suffering badly.

  • Hello, I have not had this experience however it sounds like the symptoms you are describing are new and not getting better, perhaps a call to the BC nurses to discuss your concerns might be an idea? Maybe they can offer further advice.
