I had lumpectomy and lymph node surgery 3 weeks ago. I was in and out in one day without any advice on recovery. I am feeling alone and frightened.
I was told not to remove the waterproof dressings for 2 weeks. With the result last weekend I ended up in hospital overnight with a bad infection. They drained it but said they hadn't got it all out. Was on morphine and antibiotic drip. Sent home with antibiotics which finish tonight. No follow up support.
I had an appointment at Breast Clinic to get dressings off last Tuesday. To cut long story short, they had to give local anaesthetic and cut to drain infection out. Was given pads to put in bra.
Friday I started to feel more like myself, spent yesterday resting and drying wound. Slept last night but this afternoon I have started leaking again. It's no where near as bad as last weekend. Am worried after 3 weeks I've not healed.
I get my results on Thursday by phone call, although I'm lucky to have a good family support network, I feel let down by the professionals.
Looking for advice or anyone that has been in similar position.
Thank you
Hi hun, Iv had surgery a month ago, Iv also had lymph node surgery a week ago, they removed my drain. I was told to keep taking meds to manage the pain, I was also given a heart shaped pillow to putnder the armpit to take the pressure off, also told to make sure I keep wearing my surgery bra. I also get results this week
I think. Any questions do contact your breast care nurse. Hopefully it all goes well xx
Glad you have had more support/advice than I got. I have been using pillows to ease pressure. Good luck with your results too. Xx
Hi, the lovely folks here at Macmillan are always in the end of the phone to offer a bit of extra support and advice. You can call the, on 0800 808 0000. Best wishes
I’m sorry they left you feeling alone, after my lumpectomy and lymph surgery, it was similar in the sense they said, don’t shower for 48 hours and leave the dressings until they fall off, but if anything arises call bcnurse in hours of operation otherwise go to emergency.
ihope you have good contact now with breast cancer nurse and always always always call them if you have any concerns at all, never think you are being a bother to them if you feel something is not right
Hi, I had a lumpectomy last year and after a few weeks noticed my scar had opened, small hole, phoned. BCN and they checked it and arranged appts for me to attend the community nurses. They changed my dressing until it was resolved. It sounds like you need a follow,up appt to check your wound. Call your BCN or alternatively your GP x
Hi,
Like everyone, I'm sorry this is happening!! I had a double mastectomy and lymph node clearance a few years back. I felt the same to be honest!! I had one side drained a few times as it was leaking through the stitches and a few infections. If I remember correctly, it took a good few weeks to stop leaking so hopefully you will heal soon!! I think you know your own body and if something doesn't feel or look quite right, contact anyone you can!! I was 24 and very worried about wasting people's time but luckily my mum wasn't happy and took over. Maybe find a friend or family member to help?
I don't know if this is helpful at all or similar to you, but keep calling until you are heard and taken seriously!! I really hope you feel better soon and get the support you need :)
Thank you, I was back again to breast clinic on Monday and like you been told this is normal and will take a while to heal. That has helped put my mind at rest.
I'm so sorry this happened to you at such a young age. I get my results of operation tomorrow and am very nervous.
All the best for tomorrow. Hopefully it all goes well xx
