I'm just about to start weekly sessions of paclitaxel.  Is it worth my while wearing cold packs on my hands and feet to help prevent nail damage and possibly neuropathy?

  • sorry its not a long answer above, but yes is the best answer, i have painful fingers and ties and nail beds, it sucks

best of luck (hugs) i am just finished last week, hoping for it to fade and eating green leafy food, fish and everything fight the inflammatory reponse

  • Hi Sourdough, I didn’t have Paclitaxel I had docetaxel. I used polybalm on both my finger nails and toes nails. For me it worked and I didn’t have any discolouration or nails falling off. They were a bit brittler compared to normal. Polybalm is expensive but I’m glad I used it. I didn’t do cold socks or gloves only the cold cap.

  • Hi

I had 12 weekly sessions of paclitaxel, didn't use anything and didn't have any problems with hands, feet or nails. However, we're all different and it's not easy to know whether you'll get problems or not.

Let us know what you decide to do and how you get on as it will be useful for others following on behind.

  • I have polybalm, I shall use it. Thank you

  • are you on weekly or biweekly? if biweekly absolutely use gloves. i have polybalm too, i didnt use it every day but I used it. didnt lose any nails, but I have discolouration under a couple of nails. this being said know a woman who didnt have many problems but she wore gloves for first three, another who didnt and had to be reduced to weekly doses

  • I'm starting on weekly.. I have poly balm and ill be using it

  • ok yay hopefully weekly less brutal Relaxed️

  • Hi Sourdough, I completed 10 of 12 weekly Paclitaxel sessions and would recommend taking in ice packs. I had 2 large ones from Amazon one for my hands the other for my face. The only comfort from the burning sensation to these areas was ice packs. I used Beauty Despite Cancer nail balm and only started with nail problems (slight detachment from nail bed) after the chemo had been stopped. You won't have any idea how your body will react to the Paclitaxel but to be prepared is highly recommended. Good luck x
