Hi, everyone. I am in a real quandary and losing sleep over this. Have any of you refused zoledronic acid or similar? The side effects are terrifying, and even though I know that serious ones are rare, the thought of jaw bone necrosis is sending my anxiety through the roof, particularly since I need regular dental work and the effects of zoledronic acid can show up years later. I'm sure there are alternatives to bisphosphonates but researching online isn't good for the nerves! All advice welcome.
I’m sorry you are struggling with the thought of taking this medicine. Have you spoken to your dentist about it. You will no doubt be advised to have your teeth checked prior to starting this drug. My dentist has been very helpful. and supportive. The first thing he did was a deep clean, I then had two loose teeth out and he recommended a checkup every 6 months. I recently had a tooth which broke in half vertically and my dentist saved it with root canal treatment and made a white paste filling to look like the massing half of the tooth. The reason I’m telling you this is because keeping good oral hygiene is the most important guard against infection and therefore giving the best protection. I know the dreaded jaw thing thats listed as a rare side effect is a worry but I also tell myself that the return of cancer is a worry too
Have the benefits of this drug been explained to you. It might help you if you contacted macmillan support as I’m sure they will be able to help you.
I’ve had two infusions so far. The first gave me flu like symptoms for 3 days. I was dreading the second but was pleasantly surprised that I had no effects from it at all. I have to admit that like you I was in two minds about accepting the infusions but being told I’m high risk of the cancer returning, I decided to take everything offered.
Google is only good if you use trusted website. Be careful not to Refuse this treatment based on google searches. Please speak to the professionals about your anxiety, starting with your oncology team.
Take care. Xx
I too was petrified of having zolendronic acid infusions. I spoke to the Royal Osteoporosis Society who have lots of balanced information about all the bisphosphonates. I too have had lots of dental work and now see the hygienist every 4 months. I have had one infusion and was OK, another one due soon. I have Osteoporosis and have recently had a stress fracture in my tibia so feel I must have the treatment.....still anxious though. Hope you feel comfortable with your choice and its the right one for you. All the best x
