Hi,

Has anyone had DIEP flap reconstruction before radiotherapy? Is that even possible or would the radiotherapy damage the new breast?

xx

  • Hi, I had LICAP flap surgery 10th May and am now x1 week into radio. So far so good…I was told there could be some changes but anything I’m unhappy with can be looked at 6 months after radio has finished which is when no further changes will take place in the ‘new’ breast. Good luck with everything x

  • Thank you for your reply. Great news that your radiotherapy is going well. I've just finished chemo and met with the surgeon yesterday to discuss my options. I really don't think I could cope with a prosthesis and don't like the idea of an implant so this seems like the best option. The BC nurse said my BMI is boarder line at 31 and said it needs to be under 30 for the procedure to go ahead so keeping my fingers crossed.

Hope your radio continues to go well x

  • Hi. I think you definitely want your reconstruction before radiotherapy.
I was told that I could not have reconstruction *after* radiotherapy because the breast tissue would have been damaged such that it will be less receptive to the new tissue of a flap and unlikely to 'take'.  I asked about lipofilling but was told that that too is unlikely to be successful after radiotherapy.  Must say I'm upset, since my breast, which was prefectly fine for quite some time after surgery, has puckered up and is now hideous

  • Thank you for your reply.

Sorry to hear that your breast has now puckered up. Did the docs say why that has happened? X

  • Hi,  I am going to send you an excellent link about how lipofilling can help the breast after radiation.  In fact, breast pain and cosmetic improvements have had positive impact after lipofilling so don’t let one Doctor’s opinion stop you from getting better results.  Hugs to you.  Here is the link https://www.plasticsurgery.org/news/press-releases/fat-grafting-shows-promise-for-cancer-patients-with-radiation-induced-skin-injury

This is not the only article that states benefits of lipofilling there are many more.
    Take care of yourself.
