Quadrantectomy

Having quadrantectomy Tuesday and mammoplasty with sentinel node biopsy. Just want it over with. It’s all taking too long to happen, nearly 2 months since initial contact. Don’t understand why they don’t use tamoxifen during the wait. National Cancer Institute reports better outcomes where they do. Anyone else had a quadrantectomy or had Tamoxifen prior to surgery?

  • Hi Loraine, I asked my surgeon why was I not put on tamoxifen prior to my surgery and was told it was because of side effects and added risks. If I had of been I understand I would have had to stop taking it 2 weeks prior to surgery. I guess if they suddenly bring an op forward there wouldn’t be sufficient time. I noticed one of the possible side effects of tamoxifen is blood clots too, so maybe this adds to the risk. The best people to ask would be your medical team as to why they didn’t prescribe it prior to your surgery. Perhaps statistics have changed since the National Cancer Institute reported that outcomes are better taking tamoxifen before surgery. Reports and medications are constantly improving which is great so maybe this has recently changed?

Wishing you all the best for your op on Tuesday and a speedy recovery so you can move forward onto your medication to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Hi there, sorry to hear about your wait & anxity it is causing, waiting is the worst!

I had a quadrantectomy & mammoplasty on the other side last year. I was started on anastrozole before the surgery and still take that along with abemaciclib

It took a while for all the biopsies & scans to be done before surgery but glad you have a date next week

I hope it all goes well for you

    Best wishes x
