Hi there, what is usual timeline for first mammogram after lumpectomy and radiotherapy?   I guess breast tissue has changed considerably so assume they’d do one so they have a baseline to work from??

  • Hi Ochno

It's usually a year after your operation for first mammogram after you finish treatment.

  • Thank you.   Wow, that’s a long wait!  Would that be 12 months from final radiotherapy treatment do you know?   I’m thinking I’ll go private for all follow ups.

  • For me it was 12 months from the date of my operation which I had before I started radiotherapy.

  • Ah that’s not quite so bad.  I had my op 12th January then huge delay before radiation, finished that 18th April.

  • Hi Ochno, my mammogram is due in October which will be a year after my lumpectomy. They go a year from op date.

  • Hi Ochno

i had my surgery 20th July 2022 and have just received my invitation to go for my first mammogram on the 21st July .
I had lumpectomy and Axilla clearance on left side then radiotherapy. I’m not looking forward to it as I’m still quite tender and lumpy and bumpy but I’ve got to have it so I will grit my teeth and think of England . I was told it would be 12 months from date of surgery and it is exactly that .

I am hoping that when I get the , hopefully good results , I can start feeling more positive that the treatment the cancer team gave me has worked . I’m on Letrozole for another 9 years and have six monthly infusions of Zolendronic acid .

I hope you are healing well and are having a happy life .

take care and the very best of luck.

  • I've just been invited for mine....it will be a year after I was diagnosed.....after a mammogram  and biopsies x

  • Hi  , my first follow up mammogram was also one year after the op, although my annual dates have shifted due to issues in between so now summer instead of autumn. And someone mentioned still feeling tender…. My operated side still hurts when examined and definitely when squished in the mammogram clamp, even after 4 years! I try to remember to take paracetamol beforehand which I think helps. Xx

  • I see looking back that it was  re lumps and bumps. Do try the paracetamol, and also tell the radiologist that you’re still tender in these areas xx
