Mouth ulcers with radio therapy

Hi there, can anyone tell me if mouth ulcers are a normal side effect with radio therapy for breast cancer? - I finished a 5 day course 4 days ago - and tonight noticed the skin on the inside of my cheek seems to be peeling away - I know mouth ulcers may be an effect with chemo - but it seems odd that you can get this with radio therapy treatment which is  directed to your chest - I am also getting a burning sensation in my throat which seems more explainable - I will be calling my breast care team tomorrow but wondered if anyone had similar experiences  after radio therapy to reassure me over night and thoughts that will help soothe the soreness tonight until I get some medical advice tomorrow

  • Hi Lillibet,  good idea to call the BCN as these symptoms don’t seem to be related to the radiation as the radiation was to the breast and not the mouth and neck.  I know that people who have head or neck cancer snd get radiation can have those symptoms and thyroid issues too.
I did not have any of those issues with my radiation.
Salt water mouth rinses are healing and feel good too.
    Hope you feeel better.

  • Hi Lillibet, sorry you are suffering with mouth ulcers. I used bonjela and warm salt water rinses to help. When I had radiotherapy, it covered my breast, underarm and went all the way to the base of my neck. I did get advised that I may have a sore throat but I can't remember if they mentioned ulcers, so I guess it could be a possibility if you had radiotherapy covering that far it might give ulcers. Like Hopeful Barb said good idea to check with your BCN tomorrow to put your mind at rest..
