Still waiting for HER2 result!

Hi everyone. I discovered 3 weeks ago today that I have breast cancer. This was at the Breast clinic & although not confirmed the doctor was pretty clear that he thought it was. I went to hospital a week later and was told that I am oestrogen and progesterone positive but my HER2 was borderline so it had gone for more in depth testing and depending on that being negative or positive determines treatment. I get it, I understand they need that result but it’s now been 2 weeks and the result still isn’t back! The MDT is a Wednesday so I know I won’t be any further forward now until next Wednesday but what if it’s not back by then? How long wilL I be waiting I feel like i’m in complete limbo. Im also really worried that each day is another chance for it to be doing more damage to me.

just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and how long it took to get the result back?

Thanks x

  • Hello. I'm her2 positive I wait 2 and a bit weeks for my results. I've just had my 2nd session of chemotherapy today. Hope your news comes soon Pray xx

  • mine took just over three weeks

  • You’re the same as me. HER2 borderline so it got sent for something called a FISH test. The test itself is quite complex and takes time. Mine took about 2 weeks once sent for the FiSH test. My lovely breast cancer nurse told me that treatment and tests are often slow to get going but the small delay won’t affect your outcome and it will be all steam ahead once results are known. I hope it comes soon

  • Thank you Emfandgo. It’s helpful to hear there is someone else in the same position, or who has been in this situation. 2 weeks is not long but in this situation, where you are waiting and thinking the worst, it feels like a lifetime.
Have you had your result now? What was it? Have you started treatment or got a surgery date? My nurse assured me that as soon as the result is back it will be full steam ahead but I feel like I could be waiting forever for the result right now.

  • I was HER2 positive in the end so have started treatment with Docetaxel and herceptin as well. Once your treatment plan is in place you will feel a bit better as you know what to expect. Uncertainty is the thing that’s tough to handle.
