Hi having a mastectomy in 3 weeks. I'm wondering about the recovery. I've got a fan and alexa d my room. Got a bed table and extra pillows. What else should I do? Any tips? Anything you wish you had or done? Thanks
Hi, I’ve had two mastectomies, the second by choice on healthy tissue. What you’ve done sounds good. My first mastectomy also involved an axillary clearance, and exercising required some patience. So be kind to yourself. (The second one was a doddle in comparison as no axillary clearance). Go for gentle walks if you can - but not long ones as your body will be using its energy to heal you. Don’t worry if you still aren’t back up to speed for several weeks. It took me about six weeks before I really turned a corner. That was for both surgeries, so probably down to anaesthetic and the general healing process. Take care now. Xx
Sorry you find you yourself in this situation.
Front fastening loose tops are great as couldn't get anything over head. Slip on shoes help as difficult to bend to do up shoes
Some pre prepared meals in the freezer, especially if you live alone. Place essential items on lower shelves as difficult to reach
You may not be able to get the dressings & if you have a drain wet, so get everything you need for a strip wash for a little while.
Take things steady, don't push yourself too hard. Get plenty of rest & a stroll & fresh air as you feel stronger
Hope everything goes well
Best wishes x
from experience of a family member, the seroma fluid was difficult. leaks when sleeping, we got a mattress protector as she felt concerned about issues if she was asleep.
we bought a junior mattress protector so it would just sit under her top half under sheet.
we also bought a package of very soft baby flannels for strip washes as suggested.
Hi I had a mastectomy just over 6 weeks ago .The hardest thing was the drain .I was fine and managed really well my mastectomy was a left one and I am right handed so I managed to do most things in moderation .Don't over do it and take care of yourself do your exercises .I stayed pretty positive and everything turned out ok .Had my results and just on the meds for the next 7 years .Hope all goes well stay positive x
