Lipo filling to help reconstruct breast

Hi,

After having Lobular breast cancer, then 2 lumpectomys due to the size of the lump and getting clearance, plus 23 sessions of radiotherapy, my left breast was at least 2 sizes smaller than the right. My surgeon decided a perforated Flap would be a good idea, to improve the look and size of the breast, however, there was so much scar tissue that needed to be removed the end result was not as good as expected. So more treatment is needed.

My surgeon said my options are to do nothing, reduce my good breast or lipo fill my left breast to try to create a nicer shape and size. This week after seeing my surgeon he decided lipo filling is my best option, I will need 3 or more operations because the cup size is at least 1 size smaller than the right breast.

I've been looking for experiences of people that were in the same situation as me but can't find many. I was wondering what to expect, how painful it is, my donour site will be my stomach, how successful it is and although I've seen a few have it in small quantities, is there anyone who has had it to fill a cup size up?

Sorry I'm rambling but I would really appreciate any help and support you may be able to offer.

  • Hello,  I did not have lipofilling but had researched it just in case I would have needed it.  Here is an excellent link

I am sure there will be some women who have personal experience with it.  I have seen some amazing photos online of women who have had it done.
Here is another article for you https://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/surgery/breast-reconstruction/types/autologous-flap/fat-grafting

Can you see a plastic surgeon so you can know all your options?

  • Hi Barbara,

Thank you so much for your reply and the links you provided, they are so helpful.

I don't have a plastic surgeon, it's my breast surgeon that's doing it. I was transferred from my breast cancer hospital to another hospital because I'd waited 2 years for the reconstruction to start. The new surgeon is lovely but had a few issues with him, for instance, he told me I had secondary breast cancer when I hadn't, he had got me mixed up with another patient, so I spent over a week devastated, as well as my family, when in fact everything was fine after my op.

This surgeon hasn't given my a choice, he just said this is what's needed, so I have to trust him. The only real concern is that the area to be filled is quite large, so although I have read about small adjustments using lipo filling, I've not heard of anybody yet who has had quite a large area filled. Hopefully someone will be able to reassure me soon.

Thank you once again for your support.

  • Hi Sue,  Oh you had a scare and glad it got sorted out. I live in US so the breast surgeon does not do the reconstruction you get referred to a plastic surgeon.  Can you request to be sent to one as your case is maybe a little different as you have a large area to be filled.  I would keep pushing back and try to get a plastic surgeon if you can.  It can be so very frustrating trying to navigate through the system.  I would also ask your surgeon how confident he is that you will have a good cosmetic outcome.  I hope you can get all your questions answered.  Glad the articles were helpful.  Hugs to you.

  • Hi Barbara, how are you? Thank you again for replying. I have my pre op on the 31st May and guessing the first operation will be shortly after that. I don't feel nervous about the operation, just the outcome but have decided to put my trust in my breast surgeon this time around, if the result isn't great then I'll push for someone else to do the rest of the operations.

I originally had the head breast surgeon but since been passed down the line, so will request him again if I need too and see what he thinks.

I still haven't found anyone who has had lipo filling for a large area, so if any of you lovely ladies can help please get in touch.

    Take care

  • Hi, just pushing this to the top of the pile.

I'm awaiting a date for my first lipo filling operation but still not managed to see or speak to anyone who has had a large area filled this way. I had an LTAP first but they had to remove so much scar tissue it left a much bigger area than was expected so now I'm a lot smaller on one of my breasts and need it sorting out. Although I'm having an operation soon, over been told I'll need another 3 or 4 more operations. It seems such a lot to go through if the end result isn't good or I have to go through it all again in a few years because the fat has dissolved again. So if any of you ladies have had similar done please can you tell me how you got on.

Thank you so much for your help.

  • Hi everyone, hope you are all doing okay?

just an update and a quick question. I have my first session of lipo grafting on the 12th September 2023, so I was wondering if anyone knows if I will be able to fly on the 28th October 2023 or will I not be upto it? It's just over 4 hrs flight so will I be comfortable by then to have a seatbelt on in the car for an hour, the seatbelt will be across the top of my left breast where I have the operation and also will I be comfortable enough on the plane?

    Thank you for your help.
