Good morning,

I am waiting for surgery dates, I have chosen to go for DIEP flap reconstruction, I am really anxious about the surgery, can anyone offer any advice and tips for before and after surgery please x

  • I had a mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction 15 weeks ago. I was given different options for reconstruction, but I'm so glad I chose the DIEP. I've been well supported by a specialist breast reconstruction nurse based at the hospital and I'd recommend using any similar support if it's available. In the days immediately following surgery, they try to keep you as warm as possible, so be prepared to feel hot and perhaps take a small fan to provide some relief. You're going to be dependent on others for most things in the immediate aftermath. I initially felt bad about calling for help which was silly, so it's better to get your head around it and ask for it when you need it. I also drank as much water as possible after surgery which I'm sure helped me in hospital. Also, it really helps to get moving as soon as possible after surgery. It's not easy, but the specialists say it's the best thing you can do and is one of the things they check before you can leave hospital. I found dresses/nightdresses were far more comfortable than anything else once I left hospital - clothes/PJ's with a waistband irritated the surgical scar/abdomen. 15 weeks on and I'm doing lots of walking and enjoying the odd night away. It's natural to feel anxious, but I'm sure you'll get there. Good luck

  • Thank you so much for replying and for the tips. I really hope your recovery is continuing as good as it seems to be.
I have a pre-op assessment tomorrow and I’m even nervous about that, as it seems so real now, I’ve never had any surgery or anything before so it’s all surreal and has come as a complete shock as I’m sure it has to many others going through similar x

  • Praying that all goes well and you heal well and get back on your feet.  But take it easy and don’t rush as the body needs time.
    Hugs to you

  • Hi, you have probably had your surgery by now, I hope you are doing ok? I had the same surgery 7 weeks ago so if there is anything you want to ask please do xx

  • Hi thank you for replying, how is your recovery going I hope you are well?
I am booked in for surgery on the 1st June, very scared now!
Is it wise to wear support bras for some time afterwards xx

  • Hi, It's good to hear you have a date, though totally understandable that its scary. Post-surgery bras were recommended to me. They're non-wired and they fasten at the front which is very much needed after surgery. Plus, they're VAT free which helps a little. I'm still wearing them now. There's loads of options online, but for what it's worth, I found George at Asda and M&S offered a good selection. In the early days I was only comfortable in the George ones - I think the halterneck style worked well - but the M&S ones are more supportive. I'll try and add a picture to give you an idea. I really hope everything goes well for you, and if you think of anything else, just ask x

  • How thank you so much, i managed to buy some of the George ones.
getting really nervous now for surgery.
how long did you spend in hospital? I’ve been told maybe 2-5 days.
I hope your recovery is going well, are you more mobile and getting back to school me kind normality now? Sorry hope you don’t mind me asking xx

  • Wishing you the very best of luck with surgery and your recovery. I hope it all goes well Dizzy

  • Hi PNE12,

Thank you, I’m 4 days post op, feeling ok, amazed at the flap results, waiting to have 1 of the drains removed and may go home today if not tomorrow. I’m taking each day as it comes & am moving around slowly & listening to all the advice.
    hope you are doing ok
