Wound Not Healing

Has anyone else experienced any issues with wounds healing?

I had a therapeutic mammoplasty wide local excision and contralateral reduction and sentinel node biopsy on 7 February 2023, the cancer breast (right) has healed well however the left breast has an open wound just below the nipple which is not healing.

I’ve been visiting the dressing nurse twice weekly since 21 February and had Inodine, Aquacel, Flaminal and 3 lots of silver mesh none of which have made any difference. Today the nurse removed an internal stitch which had made its way to the surface but has just said ‘it will take time’ I don’t have time I’m Triple Positive and can’t start Chemotherapy until I am fully healed so getting anxious.

Has anyone else had any issues with wounds not healing, if so how long did it take?

I’m currently at week 7 post surgery.

  • Hi, sorry to hear about your current situation. I am 6 weeks post op for the same operation as you. I have a wound that has not fully healed. For 4 weeks I had the same dressings but for the last 2 weeks they fitted a Pico system. It is a dressing that has a device fitted to it to create negative pressure to the wound and it is worn 24/7. You cannot feel it just a bit inconvenient as you have to wear it even when sleeping. After my dressing change today I am almost healed. The Pico certainly speeded things up. Might be worth asking about it at your next appointment. Hopefully I will also be able to start my ongoing treatment. Good luck and hope you heal soon. Big hugs, Sarah xx

  • Hi, sorry that you have to go through all this! I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction in April 2022. Parts of the wound did not heal well, and part of my nipple became black. Had bi-weekly changes of the wound dressings. Everything fully healed in the end (including the nip), just took quite a long time (mid April to beginning of July).

nevertheless I started Chemo mid May last year, so in my case it was possible to have chemo despite the healing issues? Might depend a bit on the size of the open wound?  When I started chemo the open wound was about 2 by 1 cm, plus another, smaller open wound. I hope things will improve for you very soon!

  • Thanks Rowliegirl, one of the breast care nurses did mention going back on a Pico last week (I had Pico’s on for the first week) but as I see a different nurse each time when I said about it today she didn’t want to use it Face palm tone2‍♀️

I’m back on Friday so will push to have one fitted again  Thumbsup tone2

Hopefully it will do the trick x

  • Thanks Emilia08 that’s very reassuring that yours did eventually heal, I think I’m just getting frustrated that no progress is being made and I’m at the same place as I was nearly 5 weeks ago.

I will try and be a bit more patient X

  • I sincerely hope it helps. The waiting for treatment is agonising.  Wishing you the very best xxx

  • You too Rowliegirl, good luck with any ongoing treatment. Big hugs X

  • I had a small open wound, they treated it with manuka honey and a mesh which I think had honey embedded.  Took 3 to 4 weeks to heal, the mesh really helped it.  It should be getting smaller, if not  they should have a plan x

  • Thanks Gardinia, one of the nurses measured it but all the rest don’t bother, they don’t even look at what the previous nurses have done.

I’ve not heard of honey being used, I will ask what the plan is when I’m there on Friday. X

  • Hi there, I also had manuka honey on my wound. If they use it on you, it can ooze through the dressing.  I panicked and thought it was my would leaking. Sent the nurses a photo and they told me not to worry it was just the honey I could see. Just a heads up if you get the honey xxx

  • Thanks for the heads up Rowliegirl, the silver did the same it oozed out of the bottom of the dressing and scared me to death. Face palm tone2
