Hi everyone,
I’m new here and was told I had breast cancer six weeks ago, and a decision to treat with surgery was taken over four weeks ago. I won’t be seeing the surgeon to discuss the mastectomy until the middle of next week, ie five weeks and one day since the original MDT. Then there will be a wait of at least two more weeks before a surgery date.
Are these timings right? How are you supposed to cope with all this waiting? Is there any point in looking at private treatment options?
How long has everyone else had to wait before starting treatment?
Thanks,
JC
Hi Celeste23
Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The amount of time that you have been waiting is not all that unusual and shouldn't make a difference to your outcome as generally cancer is not fast growing. Some people have chemo first before having the operation depending on the size of their tumour.
Waiting for operations and results is probably the worst thing about having cancer. Try to keep yourself busy doing something that you love doing to take your mind off what's ahead. I find reading a good book, listening to music and going for a nice walk with my dog helps me.
Wishing you the best of luck with your operation and with whatever treatment comes next.
Best wishes

Hi,
I would suggest you share any worries about the timescales in the meeting with your surgeon. My surgery last year was 8 weeks from hearing the biopsy result. For my own peace of mind they tried to get me through as quickly as possible, but there were delays for one reason or another - but the advice from the surgeon was always that the delay would not cause me any physical harm. Hope it all goes well.
Hi Celeste
I was diagnosed 01.06.22. My surgery was done on the 13.07.22, which I guess is around 6 weeks. In between that I had my plan and CT scan to see if disease has spread. My chemotherapy started at the beginning of September and then radiotherapy March 2023. Hope this helps. xx
