Hello. I am on my third operation for breast cancer. After the first one they found aggressive cancer and after the second dcis. I’ve been asked to choose between lumpectomy with whole nipple removed (plus radiotherapy) or mastectomy. Has anyone else had to make this decision and were they happy with the outcome?

  • Sorry to hear you're facing another operation - I haven't been exactly in your position, but I did have a mastectomy and nipple removed (no option of lumpectomy).  The operation and recovery were ok and I am very happy with the result with an implant.  I feel good knowing all the tissue is gone. Good luck with whatever you decide x

  • Thank you. My first thought was to opt for the mastectomy but my surgeon thinks I might regret it if they don’t find further cancer. It is hard to find information for lumpectomy with the whole nipple removed. I’m glad you are happy with your results and that you have peace of mind.

  • Sorry that you are facing more surgery.  Can be very hard to decide for sure.  The surgery is called a central lumpectomy and I found an excellent website that really discusses in depth.  You can really decide after evaluating all the facts.  Plastic surgery has made so many advances for central lumpectomy patients.  I definitely would talk to surgeon about the aesthetics and your options.  I am sending hugs to you and wish you the best.

  • Thanks Barbara. I can’t even decide what to wear in the morning so this is a challenge for me but being informed helps I think.

  • Oh yes being informed is vital as don’t want to be surprised by things you weren’t prepared to happen.  Will you need chemo too?
