Hi, first time on here so apologies if I get anything wrong. I’ve got grade 1 (stage unknown yet - MRI Tuesday) invasive breast cancer in one breast. I want a double DIEP masectomy and am speaking to my surgeon on Monday - has anyone managed to have a double masectomy even if only one breast affected? My doctor said that there could be a possibility as they can’t do a second DIEP type masectomy if I do get it in my right breast in the future? Great if anyone has any knowledge or experience.
Hello PJP74, Sorry that you are dealing with breast cancer diagnosis. I cannot help you with any information about the DIEP as did not have mastectomy. I don’t know your circumstances but just a word of advice before deciding on what would be best for you. Waiting until you have all the details is so important as you can then make a decision based on facts and not emotion. I totally understand the emotions as had DCIS in one breast and Stage1 grade 2 in the left. At first I thought we’ll just do a mastectomy and then I will get implants but my surgeon was patient with me and in the end I had lumpectomies and radiation to both breasts and on hormone blockers now. I listened to him and radiation oncologist too. Things can change along the way. I wish you the best on whatever you decide to do. Also I don’t know how old you are and that can figure into the decision too. I was 72 at diagnosis and cancer was not aggressive.
Hugs to you.
Barbara
