Mastectomy not healing

Hi All

I had mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I am 6 weeks post op and still having problems. My incision won’t close up so I have a hole in the centre . My consultant has seen me every week since the surgery and tried various things and different dressings to close it. I have also had to take antibiotics the whole time due to it being an open wound. Has anyone else experienced this or know what they will do if this continues?

  • Can I ask what kind of reconstruction you had? Sometimes that happens for a bit with diep, and it takes weeks to heal.  On F there is a UK Diep  site, and using picco dressings has helped a lot of people to heal there. Have you tried those? Once it heals the surgeon can also later remove the wider scar with a new neater one. The other option is VAC, vacuum assisted closure.  Sending lots of positive healing vibes!

  • Hi thanks for replying. it was just reconstruction with implant. I’m on my fourth week of pico dressings

  • I'm really sorry to hear this is happening to you Silver23! It's already so much to go through without added complications thrown on top.

I have been dabbling with hyperbaric oxygen throughout my treatments. These are available through MS charities and they will admit cancer patients.

The oxygen treatment is excellent for wound healing and could be worth looking into.

The NHS does have some tanks but will only refer patients who are suffering from quite intense injuries such as necrotising skin wounds, diabetic ulcers which won't heal, brain abscesses, and for cancer - late stage radiation wounds. It's a hard list to read but if gives you some idea of the healing potential in oxygen.

I wish you all the best and sending healing thoughts.
