Mastectomy

I am waiting for my appointment to go and have a mastectomy and my reconstruction is being done in 4 stages has anybody else had this done ?

  • I am awaiting a mastectomy op too but an not able to get reconstruction because the cancer is in two different areas in my right boob.  I'm finding it hard waiting for the op - seems so strange to be told I have cancer when I don't feel ill at all.  I just want it done asap and to move onto my recovery. I have been offered the option of reconstruction later if I want to have it. I think the worst bit so far was the biopsy - which was very painful and having to tell people.  Good luck with the op.

  • I agree the biopsy was bad I still have bruises from it even though I got it done 3 weeks ago. And it seems you are thinking like me I can’t believe I have been told I have cancer as I feel fit and well. The lump i found is 7cm with signs of cancer and the doctor said I have DCIS   0 stage so they are hoping when I have the mastectomy I may not need any other treatment. Still finding it hard though and keep putting on a brave face for others

  • It is hard being strong for everyone else. I feel sad that my diagnosis has made everyone sad. My lump is 37mm but I have another one a bit smaller too. I’m really happy with the care I have had so far. I think all we can do give our bodies over to the care of the medical team & then get them back for our recovery. I’m having my op on the 24th April. It has definitely made me feel less alone talking to you. We are definitely on a journey that we wouldn’t have chosen but women power will get us through. XX

  • I go the hospital on the 21st of this month so should find out then when my op is I will keep you posted but in the mean time if you need someone to message I am here for you 100%

  • Same here! Let’s hope they get you in quickly. XX

  • I had DCIS stage 0.  I had a Mastectomy in October with immediate reconstruction (albeit with an expander).  I am due to have the expander replaced with an implant in April, along with mammoplasty to symmeterise everything. Other than that I haven't needed any further treatment. I count myself fortunate Slight smile It's not easy going, but trying to stay positive helps, and you will get through it! One day at a time. Take care

  • Hi Wolfie2023 (autocorrected to Willie - glad I spotted that and rectified!)

I found my lump in November. I had several scans and biopsies culminating in a stage 2 diagnosis and had a mastectomy and LN removal 7 weeks ago and immediate DIEP flap reconstruction. six weeks on all wounds are healed to early scars and I had my first chemo yesterday and used the cold cap (in the hope of minimising hair loss). I don’t know what your 4 step reconstruction will entail.
I found the approach that worked for me was to take one appointment at a time, and not look at the longer term goal as that can be quite overwhelming for even the most robust of characters. I found it helpful to go in to each procedure having read up on it, no destabilising surprises! The one curve ball that threw me was being told I would have my surgery at Chelsea when I’d expected Sutton, not something I had any control over and it made me a wreck for a day or two.
Good luck with your op and reconstruction x

  • Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it and hope all goes well for you in April I will try and be on here as much as possible so if you want drop me a message anytime x

  • Thank you for your message and I will take onboard what you said and try not to think to far ahead and take each appointment as it comes x

  • And to you too.  Good luck with it all and take care, one day at a time.
