Pain after biopsy

Hi all

i have had to have two biopsies on my left breast to try and establish HER2 status - both failed, so I have been put forward for surgery and I am waiting for an appointment with the surge on. I had aching for a day or two after each biopsy but then all was okay. It is now 4+ weeks after the second and I now have pain in my breast. It is not as low down as the biopsy and is spreading up towards my armpit. There is a constant ache, occasional pain and it is sore when I press on the area.

Has anyone else had this? is it normal after biopsies?

thank you x

  • Hi   sorry you are having all this trouble.  Don't think this is normal after a biopsy and it needs checked, as it could be an infection.  If you have a temperature, take paracetemol and contact NHS 24.  Hope you get it sorted soon.

  • Hi, I’m in a similar position. Four weeks on and in that time I’ve had pain at the top of my breast (lump is in lower part), pains into armpit and now have a pain to the right of it, as I look down, cleavage side. It never hurt before the biopsy, the waiting for surgery seems like an eternity and during that time my boob seems to be shouting at me to make sure I can’t stop worrying. I still have another two weeks until surgery, I was thinking I might phone the breast nurse on Monday, as in my mind it’s just getting worse while I wait…

  • Hopefully if we are both feeling it, it might be linked to the biopsy (fingers crossed). I was thinking the same - to ring on Monday if I’m still sore.

from reading posts on here, I think there is a lot of waiting for results, treatment etc it is so hard to carry on normally isn’t it. I hope your surgery goes well x

  • Yes, the waiting is awful, there are moments when I forget about it all, and remember life before the sinister mammogram! But I find that more unsettling as you have to remember it all over again. Although the ongoing breast pain has made me feel more positively about the surgery, I think I’ll be happy to have pain for a good reason now…good luck with your treatment too x

  • I know what you are all going through and I expect most of us on here experienced similar pains before surgery. The waiting is so awful but if it helps, I had exactly the same thoughts about the discomfort being the cancer growing rapidly. Of course it hadn’t once it was removed but the mind plays havoc with you during this period. We have to go through so much before the actual surgery. I had biopsy, magnetic tracer inserted, an injection day before surgery to highlight lymph nodes plus pre-op blood checks. It was constant appointments. You will feel so much better once you have surgery and can get on with your treatment. Hope it goes well for you all.

  • Thank you SuziQ

no temperature but I will keep an eye on how I am feeling. If it isn’t normal after a biopsy I will definitely ring them on Monday (unless I feel unwell before).

  • Hi, thank goodness I am not on my own with this, I have had  2 biopsies, and seem to be in pain in my breast too, weeks after, but not in the biopsy site. I am still waiting for more results from a scan. Xx
