Hi I am new to the group, due to have my second chemo Thursday, my hair started to fall out big time from last Thursday.  I am going to have to shave my head at the weekend by then I reckon only a few wisps left. Wig app on 7th feb. My head at the minute is so sore to touch any advice what I can do to calm it down, please x

  • Hi Mandy5, sorry to hear about your diagnosis and sore scalp from hair loss. I have also lost quite a bit of my hair but haven’t experienced a sore scalp.
I have been using faith in nature shampoo as it has no parabans so whether that has helped I don’t know. There is a lady Jennifer Young who has products for cancer patients, I don’t know if she has some scalp treatments that might help.
Hopefully there are others who might be able to offer some advice on treatments/tips they have used that might help.
Good luck with the wig appointment. I found my lady extremely helpful and I was able to try several wig designs and colours. Also she made sure the wig fitted properly and that I have the correct shampoo and conditioner to make sure it stays in good condition. Having had highlighted hair I found it difficult to get a match so have opted for something as close as I could find. Don’t feel hurried into making a decision it’s worth taking your time to make sure you are happy and comfortable with it.

Wishing you all the best on your journey.

  • I shaved mine ahead of chemo and didn't suffer much scalp pain at all. The only weird thing was that without the weight of my long hair, my hair felt like it was pulled back the whole time, I think because the hairs were in a different position than normal.

As I wasn't trying to hang on to my hair, as soon as it started to fall out, I would rub my scalp gently in the shower to encourage hair to come out that was going to anyway. I think that probably helped with any pain too.

Mine came out in patches and on top of my head first so I ended up with bald head and shaved sides, which was quite amusing. When it grew back, the sides came back quicker than the top too.

  • Hi, I had a sore head when I lost my hair too, I did shave it after the first chemo as it started coming out in clumps, so it was like having many bald spots, and I didn’t fancy a comb over!

when I went to the wig fitting, I was advised to use a gentle moisturiser on my scalp each day, which I have done, and it has helped, it is not sore now other than very occasionally.

I hope the soreness goes away very soon, and wish you all the best for the journey ahead. x

  • Thank you for your friendship and advise I hope u are keeping well xx

  • Maybe I should have shaved  my head before chemo but couldn’t bring myself to do it until it started to fall out itself. Now it just needs gone. So yea I will try wash it  just sore to touch thanks for getting back to me hope you are keeping well yourself x

  • Thank you for your advice hope u r keeping ok yourself x

  • Hi Mandy5 since my first chemo 3 wks ago, i recently started getting  a sore head not all over just at the crown (where its starting to come  out)- when i spoke to the nurses this week they said its quite common the pain is due to the hair follicles, my hair has started to shed despite using the coldcap and only washing twice a week with Aveeno shampoo. I accepted early on that i lose my hair so shaved it short so i would be a little more prepared, strangely its more sore at night X

  • Thank you for your advice I will try Aveeno x
