Radiotherapy tiredness

I had mastectomy with reconstruction in September. Oncotype score was 12 so chemo not advised. I am today on day 10 of 15 radiotherapy and am struggling to stay awake! I slept 8 hours last night, got up, showered, dressed and ate breakfast and I'm ready for a nap! Did anyone else have this and how long can I expect it to last?

  • I think it is very usual to feel tired on radiotherapy. It peaks at 2 weeks after treatment and then improves. For some it’s quite short lived and for others it can last 6-8 weeks, but it gradually improves over that time. Your body is dealing with a lot of inflammation from the radiotherapy and that is why you are so tired - your body wants to use the energy to heal.

keep up with your radiotherapy exercises each day over the coming weeks and months - it really helps maintain movement and makes it all much more comfortable.

hope the tiredness passes soon x

  • Hi   so sorry to hear you're struggling with tiredness as a side effect of radiotherapy, that must be so frustrating.. We all react slightly differently but this should improve over time. The advice I had from my oncologist during all my treatment was to try and continue to exercise (for me this meant walking) even just a few minutes and even on the days when I felt really tired. It's a bit counter intuitive but I do think it helped me. I hope you get through this stage quickly. Best wishes
