I've finished chemo for HER2 and have to have one breast removed in January. I don't want reconstruction and asked to have both removed so I'm not lop-sided, but the surgeon has refused to do this at the same time. I've been told that I'll have to wait at least 6 months and have counselling to make sure it's the right decision. I'm very upset about this, has anyone else experienced this? Do I have the right to insist on a double mastectomy? Any advice appreciated!
Hi Hello123
I have requested my other breast removing. I spoke to my breast care nurse who made an appointment for me to see my consultant who was very sympathetic and said that I would need to see a psychologist to ensure it is the right decision. Breast Cancer Now have a service called Someone like Me. I contacted them and spoke with a lady who had gone through a second mastectomy for symmetry. She was great. I’m having the psychological appointment next week. I’m glad I have taken time to think through my decision. What I find strange is that women who want breast reconstruction don’t have to go through this pathway. My initial mastectomy was performed during lockdown and I wasn’t given a choice to reconstruct.
I hope you manage to discuss your choices with health professionals and make the decision that’s right for you.
best wishes X
You have to be articulate with the surgeons they are right you have to talk to a psychologist before bmx as some pts want both off for wrong reasons e.g reflex response to news of cancer, some because they believe wrongly it reduces risk of cancer , you also have to be sure were you derive your sexuality from.
I was told I couldn’t have dmx but I insisted one anaesthetic is safer than two so they did the dmx (still had to talk to psychologist) I have no regrets in fact I have no back pain now and feel free so persist if you are sure of your preference
