I was on tamoxifen for 3 yrs changed to lectrozole coupe mo tbs ago. I experienced horrific nightmares first week or two. Now waking lot in the night, trigger finger, burst blood vessels in fingers 4 occasions, painful knees, painful neck etc. I think I would prefer to go back on tamoxifen. Now I received a letter saying my dexa scan showed osteopenia and I need bisphosphonates. I do t want to take these unless I have to as I am concerned about side effects. I also have hiatus hernia.

Has anyone suffered like this. I wish they hadn't suggested the option to start lectrozole before fou g the dexascan!

I am wondering if I go back on tamoxifen I will be able to look after osteopenia with diet or exercise.

Thanks

Pat

  • Hi Pat2

So sorry to hear you are struggling with Lectrozole. Hopefully the side effects will settle down after a few weeks but if not you could try asking for a different brand, I use Accord without any ill effects.

I also have osteopenia, currently I take Calci-D chewable tablets which are calcium and vitamin D. I am waiting for an appointment to have an injection instead of taking the tablets, the injections are only every 6 months. There are side effects with the injection but I understand these only last a couple of days. There are different options you can explore, hope you find a solution that suits you.

  • Hi Pat I am on this and my joints do ache but easing unfortunately mine worst problem is low mood which is affecting me more but dont want to keep changing and then having different side effects you feel so helpless when you know you should snap out of it, I have just been called for jury service an dreading it at one time I would have loved it but scares me to death at the moment - stay strong

  • I'm one month in on letrozole and Ibandronic acid and find that I'm in constant joint and muscle pain. I have been assured that it will settle down over the next three months. Hopefully it will be the same for you.

I have just started on the Abemaciclib chemotherapy tablets today. Hoping there won't be side effects.

  • Hi yes joints have got better just need  to sort low moods out never look at side effects but it is one of them never noticed it creeping up but phew need to snap out if it

hope all goes with with your journey

  • I have been on Letrozole now for 3 months and bisphosponates ( ibandronic acid daily tablet ) for 2 months . I too have joint aches . Some days worse than others but all bearable. I did lots of research before starting them as I did read the leaflets regarding side effects and it panicked me. In my mind there was no question that I had to take them to give me the best chance for the cancer to stay away. Brand does seem to make a difference ( bisphosponates are ACCORD ) . Letrozole have been Sun and accord. I take the Letrozole at 5.30 evening which seems to have helped.
Obviously it is a personal choice for all of us what decision we come too. Hopefully all, these comments will help Pat2 to come to a decision she is happy with.

Good luck to everybody going through this. Only if you are going through this ‘journey’ can we fully understand each other.

  • Hi Pat. Sorry you are experiencing these awful side effects. I started on Anestrozole eight weeks ago.I had a few aches and pains at beginning but seems to have settled down. I have osteoporosis which was diagnosed three years ago so I was already on a monthly ibandronic acid tablet when I found out I had breast cancer. Oncology were ok with me staying on my monthly tablet. The first biophosphate I was prescribed was Alendronic Acid.It really didn’t suit me so I tried ibandronic which I have found ok, no noticeable side affects after 2.1/2 years. I take a prescribed chewable Vitamin D/calcium tablet daily. You need to increase your weight bearing exercises such as walking and get as much vitamin D and calcium as you can.  It makes you really fed up when you have to take these medicines because of the side effects but hope you can find a solution.
