Hi Everyone

I have cancer in the right breast. My armpit lymph nodes were negative.I have had 2 operations and both margins came back as positive.

I have been offered 3rd margin removal to see if its negative or just have mastecomy. I would like some advice on what to do next.

  • Hi Fuchsia; I haven't experience of your question, but noticed you haven't had response so I'm just giving you a bump to the first page.

    Best wishes whatever you decide.

  • Gosh, you have been through so much & still faced with more decisions to make. It's really hard to decide, I guess some of it depends on if you can face more rounds or surgery without a guarantee of a resolution

Has you surgeon made a recommendation? X

  • Only you can choose what to do next but I will share my experience and hope it helps in your decision making. I have cancer in my left breast and like you my lymph nodes were negative. Initially I was offered a lumpectomy but then further tests showed that I had a third lump. At this point my consultant advised having a mastectomy. Whilst this wasn't what I wanted to hear I did understand her explanation that having a mastectomy I could be sure that the cancer had gone. I wanted that certainty so I go in for surgery on Thursday for the mastectomy and immediate reconstruction. Best wishes whatever you decide.

  • Hi you've been through so much already, I'm sorry you are looking at facing a 3rd operation. I have heard of a few ladies having multiple lumpectomys and eventually getting clear margins. I suppose it all depends how likely they think it will be, and how small the margins have been?

Mastectomy is not an easy choice, but sometimes it's for the best. I had a mastectomy and reconstruction 2 weeks ago, and I'm doing Ok. There is lots of support out there if you end up having it done xxx

  • Hi Fuchsia,  You have been through a lot for sure and although I was not in your situation I can understand how frustrating it is.  I think another thing to consider too is your breast size.  If you are not too small breasted the extra removal of tissue should be ok so you will have a good cosmetic outcome.  Surgeons can move tissue around too while in there doing the surgery.  It is so hard sometimes when you have choices because you want to make the right choice.  Can I ask what your pathology report said?  That is something to look at too.
I am thinking of you and I know whatever you decide it will be right for you.  Best thing is to make your decision based on facts and not emotions and believe me that is hard to do.  I went through it in my own diagnosis and if you read my information you will see how it stressed me out.  But I did make the decision at last and it feels right.

  • Hi Kitty

my surgeon has suggested mastecomy because marigns that were removed have cancel cells under the microscope lens.

  • Hi Barbara

I am 40C bra, I have lost already about 1 inch in size when they rmoved 2 margins on this breast. My surgeon has suggested mastecomy because 2 margins that were removed under the microscope show cancer cells, And the concern is that they will get bigger and require more surgery to remove them.

  • Hi Fuchsia,  I certainly understand and can see why the surgeon is reluctant to keep on taking out more tissue.  Sounds like he is giving you his best advice and even though it is not easy you will have the cancer removed and then can decide on reconstruction or not.  Never easy to make decisions but the surgeon is giving you his opinion and he has seen this before.  Take care and good luck to you.
