Boob after lumpectomy

Having had my op back in May  starting tamoxifen and radium at end of June. I thought I would have a rest. But no problems now with my womb. But that’s another story booked in for full hysterectomy for preventative measures

anyway what I’m now experiencing in my boob is a tender feeling as if I’ve lifted heavy weights and building muscle it’s sore too touch especially when I stretch my arm in the air. There’s a pull feeling and solid feeling in my breast. Gas anyone had this. Is it normal. It’s just started these last couple of weeks x

  • Hi Army,  wish I could help you with your questions but my recommendation would be to contact your breast surgeon so could do exam and evaluation.  Could be from radiation but not sure.  Good luck to you.  Did the radiation oncologist ever mention doing breast massage after you finished radiation?  I live in Florida and my radiation oncologist told me to do daily breast massage for 6 months starting 3weeks after radiation was completed.  I have sent you the link for it but don’t do it until cleared by your surgeon.  Take care and hope you feel better soon.  Sometimes it is one thing after another.

  • Thank you for replying. I’m booked in with 6 month check up with the surgeon on 18th Nov I was going to wait until then to have a word. I’ll see how it evolves I might have to ring up sooner x

  • It's still fairly early days and I found that as things felt better, I did more, and then I was sore again. Keep up the stretches as it takes a very long time for the nerves to heal.

My surgeon told me breast tissue doesn't really like to be disturbed so when you have a lumpectomy, and they do their best to give you a decent shape at the end of it by moving tissue around, then it takes a very long time to heal inside.

I was surprised at how stiff I was again after radiotherapy.

I had surgery in Feb 2021 and I still get tenderness and a heavy feeling when I overdo things - but it isn't stopping me, I have just got used to that happening.

My oncologist said it takes at least 6 months after radiotherapy for your breast to settle, Mine was definitely still firm and swollen for many months.

Of course, if you're worried at all, then call your BCN and it's good you have an appointment soon to talk it through.

  • Thank you. It has been ok although I did experience a sort of cording initially. But it seem to be more in my breast than underarm when I stretch my arm up. I did think it Elias ok but just wanted to check other’s experience the same kind of feelings. I will start up with my stretches again. I think I became too complacent about needing to do them x

  • I was surprised at how long I needed to do the stretches for and how stiff my shoulder was with a loss of range of movement. I had minor cording along my arm for a while (months).

All recovered now though and it's just the odd soreness I still experience when I over do it - like the nerves have never fully recovered. But it is not an issue at all any more.

  • Hi, how long did you do the exercises for?  I stopped for 1 day when I found my wound was open and noticed the pull and discomfort again so immediately started the exercises again. Week 5 post op for me.

  • Yes the nerve damage was evident from the start more so in my shoulder and down my side. It’s still there but not as bad  But I always had full movement I think I became complacent about exercises. So think I need to re start x

  • To be honest I didn’t do the exercises for very long as I always had full movement just slight cording and nerve damage. I think I need to start exercising again properly though as I don’t like the feeling of the pulling in my boob x .

  • Thank you for sharing this post. I had lumpectomy in April and Radiotherapy in July. I am experiencing aches & swelling  at the moment and stiffness in my arm. Being a teacher I expect I am tired but it is good to know that your surgeon expected 6 months to settle. I need to get my exercises going again - I had no advice post treatment! Thank you!
