Fluid after mastectomy - Hi, I am three weeks in after surgery for a single mastectomy.

I just wondered what is a normal amount of fluid? And if so how long before it starts to be absorbed into my body?

At the moment it feels as if I’m growing a new boob!! It’s  a bit uncomfortable, and I find it better if I wear a  bra or vest? It’s bearable. But I have no feel for is how long before it starts to go down. I understand that my body will absorb it eventually. I don’t know how long I should expect it to take?

I am drinking lots of water, and doing my exercises regularly

  • Hello MissMolly,

I had to have the fluid drained about 3 times as I had rather a lot, you could hear it sloshing around! Mine settled down after about 6 weeks.

Have you told you nurse as if it's getting uncomfortable they may be able to aspirate it in the clinic?

Wishing you well for your recovering

  • Hi, thanks for replying so quickly. Mine is the same I can feel it sloshing around. I will have a chat with the nurse I think if it doesn’t settle.
