Hi all,

I'm 6 month post surgery and still getting aches and pains, but in last few days quite prominent, especially around where lymphnodes were removed (4 removed), all my shoulder, neck and shoulder blades are sore (muscular), going down my arm too. Also feels very slightly  swollen, having that "golf ball" sensation in my armpit, similar to post surgery.

Has anyone else experienced this after this length of time? I'm due a post radiotherapy appointment with oncologist next week so will mention it all then too.

Many thanks

  • I am 15 months post surgery,  and have felt like this for a few months. I would be interested I what tge oncologist says. Take care x

  • Thank you for the reassurance that its not just me! I will feedback what the oncolgist says after my appointment (on 18th Oct). Take care also x

  • Hello Bells,  I had two nodes removed as well as a tumor in my left breast , with breast reduction /lift - underwent radiation 25 rounds with 5 boosters, finished the rads April 18th.  I have been having pain at my incision as well and in the nipple area, I don't know if you have been doing lymphatic breast massage or not.  Also, using a Swell Spot seems to make a huge difference - the radiation causes scaring, I am sure you know - but the Swell Spot helps to break it up as well as move the fluid.  I found out about the Swell spot from my physical therapist that I went to for a shoulder problem that was caused by the positioning and the turning of my head for the rads.  She ended up being a LBM therapist as well and worked out some cording under my arm and breast and taught me how to self perform LBM.

  • Hi , I'm 5 months post lymph node clearance , 24 nodes removed, (lumpectomy and sentinel node removal 11 months ago), and 2 months post radiotherapy. My chest, armpit and upper arm are also still sore , very similar symptoms to your own. A couple of weeks after finishing radiotherapy I thought I was starting with lymphodoema as the side of my breast and underarm were slightly swollen. I saw a  lymphodoema physio through our breast clinic and she advised it was inflammation from both the surgery and radiotherapy. She said that breast tissue can continue to react to the radiotherapy/surgery for at least 18 months and any nerve damage can take longer!!!!. I am continuing my post op exercises and a couple of extra she showed me. She also suggested using a gel filled cool pack, kept in the fridge not the freezer and I do find it very soothing. Its common to hunch forward over our breasts to protect the injury and this can cause pain in the upper arm, shoulder and back. I would try and see your local breast / lymphodoema physio for more advise and exercises. Good luck and I hope your oncologist was helpful too.

  • WOW that is a lot of nodes I only had two sentinel nodes removed!  18 MONTHS!  good grief!  I am seeing my breast doctor NP today because my GP noted that I have orange peel skin on my right breast (the one that did not have cancer) the GP also noted that my left breast was hot.  I think the orange peel may be fat necrosis from the reduction surgery, but they told me that any skin changes need to be checked.  good luck and I hope it doesn't take 18 months!
