Hi just wondering if anyone else has experienced ridges appear on finger nails , I had my last chemo cycle 21st July and have noticed all my nails have ridges on them and a couple have started to split by the ridge , will my mails fall off   im putting plasters on the worst ones of fear I am going to rip them off ....any advice please much appreciated xx

  • Hi Brunette 23

Yes I had exactly the same on finger nails and they did split at edges so used plasters. They never came off. My big toe nails however did come off as I had bad neuropathy in my feet which may have been why. I did rub hand and nail cream in them to try and keep them subtle. Good luck x

  • Mine have ridges and look awful, feel awful and are painful

  • Yes I finished FECT in May and my nails are half way growing back. They are discoloured and quite dry and flaky. I have used OPI nail envy throughout and feel this has protected my nails and stopped them splitting completely.

  • My toe nails were worse but no pictures and they came off ,Scream

    1. I overheard some girls saying they had painted their nails with dark colours whilst they had chemo, not sure if it was for cosmetic look or actually made a difference to the nail xx
  • I did mine in black...not sure if it helped or not ...time will tell

  • I think the dark colour is because the nail damage is worsened by sunlight. I had white lines on my nails - presumably due to halted nail growth because of the chemo. I also had brown staining from EC. I then had cracks on my toe nails once chemo and radiotherapy had finished- horizontal ones. I found a youtube video on repairing toe nails with a tea-bag (of all things) and it worked so I didn't have to cut my nail off. Nails can sometimes be sore due to neuropathy or infection or because the nails are digging in to the side of the finger or toe. I got some toe nail bumpers that stopped my toe nails catching and that helped too.

I am six months post chemo and still using OPI nail strengthener and keeping my finger and toe nails manicured (by me). My toe nails need dark polish as they are lifted and white in places and not too pretty without the polish!

  • Hi thats an interesting tip with the t bag !!  Hope your nails recover soon !!

  • I think it will improve once they have totally replaced themselves once. It just takes time!

  • I had white lines on my finger nails but my toe nails thickened. Toe nails have been so slow to grow that I still have one toe with the end very thickened and it hasn't grown out yet - I stopped chemo in Jan 2021, over 1.5 years ago!

Fingers nails grew out and have been fine since.
